Electrification of the Eifel line near Euskirchen (lots 2 and 3)
Work on the renovation and electrification of the railroad section near Euskirchen as part of the overall “Electrification of Eifel lines” project began in January 2025. For the electrification of the northern section of the Erfttalbahn from Euskirchen to Nettersheim, the construction project was divided into two lots (lots 2 and 3).
On the Eifel section in lots 2 and 3, the foundation preparations such as search shafts and explosive ordnance probing have already been completed.
The foundation measures on the Euskirchen - Nettersheim section with approx. 32 kilometers of track started in January 2025. The first masts for the overhead lines have been erected.
The Eifel project consists of three lines in total:
1. Erfttalbahn: Euskirchen to Bad Münstereifel (14 km)
2. Voreifelbahn: Bonn to Euskirchen (3 lots: lots 6, 7, 8)
3. Eifel line: Hürth-Kalscheuren-Trier
This is a total of approx. 300 km.
One of the challenges of this project is the topography of the route, which requires rail-bound logistics due to the limited accessibility of the tracks. Concrete transport using concrete mixers on wagons on the rolling highway is therefore necessary. The simultaneous logistics on the railway with regard to construction activities and transportation to and from the site must also be taken into account.
